New translation tool eases porting to Power Macintosh

Boston, August 1st 1994 - MicroAPL Ltd of London, England, today announced the release of Version 1.2 of PortAsm for Macintosh, a translation tool which converts 680x0 assembly language to PowerPC assembly-language. PortAsm is a source-level porting tool which solves the problem of translating applications written wholly or partially in assembler to take full advantage of the Power Macintosh. Already proven in practice, PortAsm has been used by several major software houses to produce the Power Macintosh versions of their applications.

The new version of PortAsm offers improved code generation, optimization of Macintosh toolbox calls, better support for the interface to Pascal and C, and support for symbolic debugging using Apple's ppcAsm PowerPC assembler. It runs on any Macintosh system under MPW, but for best performance Release 1.2 of PortAsm is also available in a version re compiled for the Power Macintosh, making it feasible to port very large applications without having to use expensive workstations.

Richard Nabavi, Chairman of MicroAPL Ltd, commented: "PortAsm is now established as the safe and effective way to port assembler code to the new generation of RISC-based systems. Release 1.2 consolidates our successes, and is part of a continuing development program which provides our customers with better performance for their Power Macintosh applications, whilst retaining compatibility with their previous source-code base."

Version 1.2 of PortAsm for Macintosh is available now. Prices start at $750 for developers with small amounts of assembler to translate. Versions for other environments such as the embedded systems market, and for translating Intel code to the PowerPC, are also available.

MicroAPL is based in London, England, and offers consultancy services as well as producing translation tools and APL Level II, the leading APL interpreter for the Apple Macintosh.
